Our brain is connected to every muscle in our body by a series of nerves. The brain tells these nerves when we want to make some sort of a movement with our body, so the nerves send these moving directions from the brain to the muscles. When the cells in the nerves start to atrophy, they no longer send directions to the muscles, which causes a disease known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis – ALS.
About ALS/LOU Gehrig’s Disease
ALS/LOU Gehrig’s Disease is characterized by degeneration of both upper and lower motor neurons that leads to muscular paralysis. It is a progressive disease, meaning it gets worse over time. It affects the brain nerves and spinal cord nerves that control the muscles in our body. As the muscles get weaker, it’s getting harder for the person to eat, walk, talk, and even breathe.
Commonly known as ALS disease, this disease has become popular due to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge that went viral on every online social network. Millions of people, including celebrities, jumped on board to create awareness for this amazing cause. Everyone was dumping ice-cold water on their heads in the name of the ALS ice bucket challenge. Not only did this Internet challenge bring a huge attention to the ALS/LOU Gehrig’s disease, but it also has donated a staggering $115 million to the ALS Association.
